Color Grading Rates & Costs in 2026
Reviewed: October 8, 2026 · Historical examples are dated separately
YunoJuno's current colorist booking benchmarks are $81 per hour and £491 per day. These are separate USD and GBP averages, not a currency conversion or a guaranteed quote. Compare hourly and day benchmarks, dated project-price examples and the scope to check before booking below.
What are freelance colorist hourly rates?
$81/hour is YunoJuno's reported freelance colorist average. By contrast, ZipRecruiter's US Film Colorist estimate is $23.39/hour ($48,641/year), dated September 29, 2026. Its job-posting and third-party salary estimates are not a price for hiring a freelance grading suite. YunoJuno's booking data also reports £491/day; the two currencies and billing units should not be treated as interchangeable.
| Lane | Typical rate | Context |
|---|---|---|
| US Film Colorist salary estimate | $23.39/hr | ZipRecruiter, September 29, 2026; employee pay estimate |
| Assistant colorist experience averages, historical | $26–$52.50/hr | BCPC 2019 survey; not a 2026 rate card |
| Freelance colorist (booked sessions) | ~$81/hr avg | YunoJuno global booking data; £491/day |
| US colorist survey average, historical | ~$115/hr | BCPC 2019 survey; not a current senior-rate benchmark |
ZipRecruiter and YunoJuno checked October 8, 2026. Historical assistant and colorist figures: BCPC's 2019 survey, analysed by researcher Katie Hinsen in Mixing Light's January 6, 2020 article. Different samples and years; no single market average is calculated from them.
Why the gap? Freelancers sell reserved capacity plus a grading suite — calibrated monitors, control surfaces, storage — and they're only booked a fraction of the week. The session rate has to carry the empty days, the gear, and the years of eye training. If you're quoting freelance grades at staff-lane numbers, you're subsidizing all of that yourself.
What is a typical colorist day rate?
£491/day is YunoJuno's reported colorist booking average. Confirm the booked day length, suite, conform work and whether client supervision is included. A half-day price does not automatically equal half the day rate.
A session can reserve a day or half-day in a grading suite, with the client attending or reviewing afterwards. Ask how setup and conform work are billed rather than assuming that every booked hour is creative grading time. Our pricing-model comparison explains when a fixed scope makes a project fee easier to compare with an hourly quote.
How much does color grading cost per project?
$200 for a five-minute project and $350 for a 15-minute short film are historical examples from Motion Grades' September 27, 2023 article. The published list is still readable, but does not establish today's quote or specify working hours, revisions or deliverables:
| Project | 2023 listed price | Our price ÷ finished length |
|---|---|---|
| 5-minute project | $200 | $40/finished minute |
| 15-minute short film | $350 | $23.33/finished minute |
| Music video | $350 | Runtime not supplied; not calculated |
| 30-minute documentary | $500 | $16.67/finished minute |
| 60-minute documentary | $1,000 | $16.67/finished minute |
Historical prices from one publisher, checked October 8, 2026. Finished-minute figures are our division of price by stated runtime, rounded to cents; working hours were not published, so hourly rates cannot be inferred.

How much does color grading cost per finished minute?
The historical examples above convert to $16.67–$40 per finished minute for projects with a stated runtime. For example, $200 ÷ 5 minutes = $40. This is a comparison of those listed projects, not a universal rate to multiply by your film's length. Shot count, conform work and delivery requirements can change the workload even when finished runtime is identical. For broader editing-market context, see our country guide.
The editor's angle: bill the grade as its own line
For editors who also grade, colorist Riley Kern's pricing guide suggests: "color grading rates should be about the same as your editor's rates." Treat that as Kern's pricing advice, rather than a universal market rule. Define the grade's scope separately, as you would for motion graphics.
In practice: build basic color correction — matching shots, fixing exposure — into your standard edit price, and quote the cinematic grade as a separate line. That split matches how the niches already price: the "cinematic" tier in wedding and corporate work, or twilight grading in real estate, is a tier above the standard edit, not a favor inside it.
What should a color grading quote include?
Compare quotes against the same scope: source format and camera count, locked runtime and shot count, conform responsibilities, look approval, review rounds, supervision, output formats and delivery date. Ask which items are included in the fee and which require additional booked time.
- Source footage. Log or RAW from matched cameras grades clean; mixed cameras, phone footage, or underexposed material needs correction hours before the creative grade starts. Quote after seeing footage, not before.
- Shot count, not just runtime. Grading is per-shot work — a 3-minute music video with 120 cuts can out-cost a 30-minute interview doc with 40.
- Supervision. Ask whether live client attendance affects the session fee or time booked.
- Delivery specs. HDR versions, festival DCPs, or broadcast-legal QC passes are separate deliverables with real extra hours.
- Revisions. Define a "look approval" checkpoint — a reference still or a graded scene — before grading the full timeline. It's the grading equivalent of capping revision rounds.
Charge for the grade — on top of a base rate that's right
A grading premium stacked on an underpriced edit rate is still underpriced. Run the calculator to get an hourly floor built from your real costs, taxes, and billable hours — then let color work pull your average up from there.
